No fewer than thirteen individuals killed and ninety-eight wounded in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's major government projects.

The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” declared the head of state.

The leader announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose term ended the prior year. This project was closely associated with his government's economic vision for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in public projects. They were executed at an accelerated speed, beating predictions to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised significant apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party called for an urgent halt in the building and running of all similar projects.

This halt was proposed while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."

In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in total adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these vital undertakings.
